Thain Family Forest & Bronx River: A New York Botanical Garden Hidden Gem
Walking through the Thain Family Forest, in the New York Botanical Garden, or NYBG, in the Bronx in New York, we find a number of informational signs. Many newer signs in the forest include QR codes. Scanning them opens extra content, including videos, species lists, or augmented views of the forest. In addition to this rare tract of old-growth woodland, the 250 acre site was chosen by Botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton, and his wife, Elizabeth Gertrude Knight Britton, for its natural diversity of meadows and rivers. They were inspired by the great botanical institutions of Europe, particularly Kew Gardens in London, and successfully rallied support from New York’s wealthy elite, to establish this park, to serve both science and the public. And with that, we reach the Hester Bridge, a historic pedestrian footbridge that spans over the Bronx River. The Bronx River is New York City’s only freshwater river.
