Beaufort SC History: John Wesley Church & St Helena Island Story
So, the tabby mansion that I showed you, was originally built by the Fuller family, and one of the Fullers got religion, and he's the one that, he'd become a preacher, that started that church, the chapel of the Eves over at St. Helena. He denounced all, he had one last bodacious party, and then he renounced all the worldly possessions. This is the Wesley Church, John Wesley, was said to preach her quite a bit during the early 1700s. He did have a big parish in Savannah, and Beaufort was an island that did not have a bridge to it until 1915. They connected to the mainland, and then in 1920, they connected to the island. They had a cable ferry that was actually pulled by mule on the east side.
