Looking for Nassau, Bahamas things to do without a cruise excursion? I left the Nassau cruise port, rented a car, and spent the day exploring the city I grew up in—from Over-the-Hill Nassau and local Bahamian food stops to Montagu Beach, Fort Montagu, Potter's Cay, Arawak Cay, and the Fish Fry. I came back to Nassau, Bahamas by cruise ship, walked out of the new Nassau Bahamas cruise port, rented a car, and spent the day moving between the Nassau visitors usually see and the places that still feel familiar to me. I start downtown before driving Over the Hill, a part of Nassau that has long marked a real divide between the visitor-facing city and everyday local life. From there, the plan becomes a search for familiar Bahamian food—with stops at The Souse House, Bamboo Shack, and Culture Kitchen before heading back toward the waterfront. At Montagu Beach, I sit down with chicken souse and stew conch before visiting nearby Fort Montagu, one of Nassau's oldest landmarks. Then I head to Potter's Cay beneath the original Paradise Island Bridge, where fresh seafood, conch, mail boats, and local history all come together in one of the city's most distinctive waterfront areas. The day continues at Arawak Cay and the Fish Fry before I make my way back through Bay Street and the Straw Market toward the cruise port. And just when I think the day is over, I finally get another shot at Bamboo Shack—this time with conch fritters, Goombay Punch, and guava duff. This isn't a list of "secret" Nassau attractions or a hidden-spots tour, and it's not one of the usual Nassau Bahamas excursions either. It's a look at Nassau from someone who grew up here: the cruise-port experience, everyday local Nassau, and the places where those two versions of the city naturally overlap.
