Passing through the John Day Dam, on the Columbia River, the lock process takes about 15 to 20 minutes; however, the whole transit—entering, tying off, locking, and exiting—usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If there is traffic, you also might have to wait your turn outside the lock. We'll speed up our video during the emptying of the chamber, as we give you more information on this amazing experience. The John Day Dam, was built during a period, when the Columbia River was being transformed, into one of the most engineered river systems in the world. Construction began in 1958, the lock was operational, and the dam began generating power in 1968, and the project was fully completed, with the final turbines installed in 1971.
