Lewis and Clark Discovery Center | Nez Perce & Hells Gate State Park
We are exploring, the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center, in the Hells Gate State Park in Lewiston Idaho. Inside, we find large maps, of both the corps route through Idaho, and the entire route from Saint Louis to the Pacific Ocean, accompanied by a timeline of key moments during the journey. The route map highlights the routes Lewis and Clark took, both out to the Pacific Ocean, and back to Saint Louis. It highlights the bitter crossing through the Continental Divide, where the expedition spent forty days contending with the Bitterroot Mountains. Once through the mountains, nearly starving, they encounter the Nez Perce, in what is now present day Idaho, who provide them with desperately needed food. After some rest, the group built canoes to complete the final leg of their journey; from the clearwater river, down the snake and Columbia rivers, to the great Pacific Ocean.
