We’re starting here at La Jolla Cove, and one of the first things you notice isn’t the water—it’s the wildlife. Right along the cliffs, you’ll see brown pelicans perched just a few feet away, completely unfazed by people. This is one of the rare places where you can get this close to them in the wild. Looking down below, the rocks are packed with seabirds. This entire area is part of a protected marine reserve, which is why there’s so much visible wildlife here. Out on the water, you’ll often see kayakers moving through the cove. That’s one of the most popular activities here, and most people say it’s worth it—especially on calm days. Coast Boulevard, is where most visits begin. One of the first things to know is parking can be difficult, so getting here early makes a big difference.
