Join us for an unforgettable Norway fjord adventure as we explore the breathtaking landscapes surrounding Skjolden, Årdalsfjord, and mighty Sognefjord — the longest and deepest fjord in Norway! Our scenic loop excursion began in the beautiful village of Skjolden at the very end of Sognefjord, where we boarded a bus and traveled deep into spectacular Jotunheimen National Park, home to some of the highest mountain peaks in all of Northern Europe. Jotunheimen, which translates to “Home of the Giants,” contains more than 250 peaks above 1,900 meters (6,200 feet), including Galdhøpiggen, the tallest mountain in Norway at 2,469 meters (8,100 feet). Along the drive, we experienced dramatic mountain scenery, roaring rivers, glacier-fed waterfalls, steep valleys, and remote Norwegian wilderness unlike anywhere else in Europe. Our land tour ended in the fjord village of Årdal, where we enjoyed traditional Norwegian cinnamon buns along with coffee and tea before boarding a scenic catamaran cruise for the journey back through beautiful Årdalsfjord and Sognefjord to Skjolden. Årdalsfjord is one of the most scenic branches of Sognefjord, surrounded by towering granite mountains, waterfalls, tiny fjord farms, colorful villages, and dramatic cliffs rising directly from the water. The fjord eventually joins the main body of Sognefjord, often called the “King of the Fjords.” Sognefjord stretches approximately 205 kilometers (127 miles) inland from the North Sea, making it the longest fjord in Norway and one of the longest and deepest fjords in the world. At its deepest point, Sognefjord reaches an incredible depth of approximately 1,308 meters (4,291 feet). Along our scenic cruise, we passed countless waterfalls cascading down the mountain walls. One of the highlights was the spectacular Feigefossen waterfall near Skjolden, one of Norway’s tallest single-drop waterfalls with a dramatic plunge of approximately 229 meters (751 feet). As we cruised through the fjords, the changing weather created incredible scenery with shifting clouds, glowing green mountainsides, waterfalls, misty granite peaks, and reflections across the calm fjord waters. Small Norwegian villages and hillside farms added even more beauty to this unforgettable journey through the heart of the Norwegian fjords. If you enjoy scenic cruising, waterfalls, mountains, cinematic landscapes, Viking history, Norway travel, fjord adventures, and nature photography, this Skjolden and Årdalsfjord excursion is truly one of the most spectacular experiences in Scandinavia.
