Acadia National Park: Jordan Pond Gatehouse & Rockefeller Carriage Roads
We are driving through, the beautiful Acadia National Park in Maine. Pulling up to the Jordan Pond Gatehouse, we were surprised at how elaborate it was, not your typical park gatehouse of today. The gatehouses were built to control access, to the network of carriage paths Rockefeller so meticulously planned, and the lodges housed the gatekeepers. Rockefeller, an avid horseman, designed the carriage roads to provide scenic, motor-free access to Acadia’s mountains, forests, and lakes. He opposed automobiles on Mount Desert Island, believing they would disrupt the island’s tranquility. The roads and bridges were built using locally quarried stone, and each bridge had a unique design. This bridge is the Stanley Brook Bridge.
