It was home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; Ephesus, the capital of the Roman province of Asia and once the second largest city in the Roman Empire; St. Paul and St. John preached here; and the Virgin Mary spent her last years in a small stone house here, where St. John is buried.
