Why you don't need the Flåm Railway? Do this instead...
Could you have an amazing day in Flåm without riding the famous Flåm Railway? We’d booked our MSC Virtuosa cruise at the last minute, and by the time we tried to book tickets for the Flåm Railway, they were sold out. MSC still had places available on their excursions, but at a price that made us wonder whether there was another way to experience this spectacular Norwegian valley. So, in true Travelling Light style, we decided to walk it instead. We set off from Flåm and followed the valley alongside the route of the Flåm Railway, heading towards waterfalls, rivers and some spectacular mountain scenery. Along the way we climbed 549 steps to reach one of the viewpoints, battled the heat, stopped for cinnamon buns, discovered some surprisingly good public toilets, and eventually walked more than 16 kilometres. But the big question remained: did we actually miss out by not taking the train? The Flåm Railway is one of Norway's most famous railway journeys, travelling between Flåm and Myrdal through spectacular mountain scenery. In this video, we show you an alternative way to experience part of the Flåm valley if you can't get a ticket, don't want to pay for an expensive excursion, or simply prefer getting out into nature. We also share practical information about the walking route, toilets, the waterfalls, the terrain, the distance, the steps and what we discovered along the way. And by the end, we think we have an answer to the question: do you really need to take the Flåm Railway to have a brilliant day in Flåm? If you've visited Flåm, have you taken the railway or explored the valley on foot?
