Are We Part of the Problem? Visiting Måløy on a Mega Cruise Ship
On this Norway cruise, we arrive in Måløy (Måløy), a small Norwegian coastal town with a population of around 3,000 — on a day when more than 6,000 passengers are arriving from MSC Virtuosa. Rather than booking an expensive excursion, we decide to explore Måløy on foot, following the recommended walk to the town’s viewpoints, discovering some beautiful scenery, a lake, historic sites and some unexpected detours along the way. We also explore Måløy town centre, look at the shops and street art, and discover what it’s really like when thousands of cruise passengers descend on a small Norwegian community. If you’re visiting Måløy on a cruise, we share plenty of practical information, including the walking route to viewpoints 1 and 2, which viewpoint we think is best, how steep the walk is, how long it takes and a few useful tips you might want to know before you set off. But as the day goes on, we also start asking a bigger question: is it fair for mega cruise ships to bring thousands of visitors into small towns that may not have the infrastructure to cope with them? There are obvious benefits for local businesses, but there are also challenges for the people who live there.
