2 Days in Rome Before Our Cruise | Food, Sights & Ancient Rome
Join us and April for two unforgettable days exploring Rome, Italy before we board our Mediterranean cruise from Civitavecchia! Rather than simply checking off the major sights, we're taking you along for our actual pre-cruise experience in Rome—from arriving at Fiumicino Airport and taking the Leonardo Express and Metro, to walking the streets of Rome, enjoying some incredible Italian food, exploring historic neighborhoods, and visiting the Colosseum Underground before heading to our cruise. We stayed at Hotel Romano, conveniently located near the Colosseo Metro station and within easy walking distance of the Colosseum. After arriving, we settle in and head out for dinner at Taverna Romana. Our second day starts with a quick espresso before we spend most of the day walking through Rome. We visit the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, the Palace of Justice, Castel Sant'Angelo and St. Peter's Square before crossing the Tiber into Trastevere. In Trastevere, we stop at Piazza Santa Maria and have what we jokingly call our "second breakfast" at Galeassi before visiting the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria. From there, we cross back over the Tiber to see Tiber Island and climb up to Piazza del Campidoglio for views overlooking the Roman Forum. After a well-earned lunch at Pizza Della Madonna in the Monti neighborhood, we take a short rest before heading back out to explore the Jewish Ghetto and the ruins around the Portico of Octavia. We then stop at Baghetto to try their house specialties, including Roman artichokes and salted cod. Our evening ends with a six-course tasting menu and wine pairings at Cuoco e Camicia before we call it a night. On our third morning, we check out of the hotel but leave our bags behind so we can make one final stop before heading to our cruise: the Colosseum Underground Tour. We take you inside some of the incredible underground areas of the Colosseum before wrapping up our two-day Rome adventure and sharing our final thoughts.
