Our West Coast Vancouver Island adventure takes an unexpected turn when the windlass aboard our Nordhavn 47 yacht, Escapade, fails—leaving us unable to retrieve 200 feet of anchor chain and our 126-pound Rocna anchor in Friendly Harbor, BC. With our plans for Hot Springs Cove suddenly on hold and a Gale forecasted for later in the day, the Canadian Coast Guard comes to our assistance, first freeing our anchor with their RIB and then coming aboard Escapade to help us manually haul the anchor and chain back aboard. With the anchor finally secure, we head back to Tahsis to troubleshoot the problem and begin the search for a replacement windlass motor. But what starts as an unwanted detour turns into a memorable week. Along the way, we encounter a large raft of sea otters, explore the small community of Tahsis, watch the fishing boats return with their daily catches, enjoy live music on the docks, pick wild blackberries, make a few new friends—and even have a couple of unexpected bear encounters! Sometimes cruising doesn't go according to plan, but those unexpected detours can become some of the most memorable parts of the journey.
