Amber Cove & Puerto Plata 2026: Is It Worth Leaving the Cruise Port?

Amber Cove and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic was our next stop on Carnival Magic, and we got off the ship with absolutely no plan. Instead of spending the entire day at the cruise port, we booked a last-minute Puerto Plata city tour and headed out to see more of the destination. Before leaving Amber Cove, we explored the port itself, including the pool area, waterslide, shopping, restaurants, activities, green spaces, and even a passport stamp stop. Honestly, there’s enough at Amber Cove to make a full day of it without booking an excursion. But we wanted to see Puerto Plata too. Our tour took us through the city with stops including San Felipe Cathedral, Pink Street, Umbrella Street, local tasting and shopping stops, and a quick visit to the beach. We also tried an empanada and learned a little more about Puerto Plata along the way. The tour was okay, but I definitely had some thoughts. I enjoyed getting outside of the cruise port and seeing more of the Dominican Republic, but some of the shopping and tasting stops felt much longer than the time we spent at the historical sites and beach. If beach time is your priority, I’d probably choose an excursion that gives you a longer beach stop. Then it was back to Carnival Magic for dinner, live music, the 80s Glow Party, and another night enjoying the ship.
