The Last Thing We Expected to See While Underway! [MV Escapade]

Cruising south from Glacier Bay National Park aboard our Nordhavn 47 trawler Escapade, we begin the next leg of our Southeast Alaska adventure with stops at Mite Cove, Double Cove, and Magoun Islands Marine Park on our way toward Sitka, Alaska. After spending four unforgettable days exploring Glacier Bay’s massive tidewater glaciers, remote anchorages, and incredible wildlife, it’s time to continue our journey through Alaska’s Inside Passage. Our first stop is peaceful Mite Cove, where the girls finally get some much-needed shore time after several days aboard the boat. From there, we head out into the open waters toward Double Cove, where we stern anchor beside another trawler and reconnect with fellow cruisers we first met back in Shearwater, British Columbia. While anchoring, we discover an issue with our windlass that may require repairs once we reach Sitka. The adventure takes an unexpected turn near the Kane Islands and Neva Strait when we spot an enormous brown bear swimming across the channel directly in front of our boat — one of the wildest wildlife encounters we’ve experienced so far in Southeast Alaska. Arriving at Magoun Islands Marine Park, we’re greeted with unusually warm weather for Alaska. For one of the first times on this trip, we break out the shorts, relax on the bow in the sunshine, explore by dinghy and kayak, and enjoy beach time with the dogs in one of the most beautiful anchorages we’ve visited yet.
