How to get the most out of your visit to Petra @julescruisecompanion #petra #jordan #visitjordan
To really get the most out of your visit to Petra, I always recommend starting some light training about three months before you arrive. The terrain here is no joke—slippery rocks, soft sand, uneven pebbles—it all takes a toll on your ankles and knees. Just the other day, I rolled my ankle in Jerash, and let me tell you, it was not fun. There are three fitness levels I usually suggest aiming for. The first level is pretty basic: just being able to walk from the main gate to the Treasury. If that's your limit, that's okay—you can always take the electric buggies—but for me, part of the magic of Petra is walking through it, breathing in the atmosphere (and all the sand!). The second level is for those who can manage around 10 kilometers total—about 5 km in and 5 km out. That would take you from the gate, down through the Siq, past the Treasury, the Street of Facades, the amphitheater, the Nymphaeum, and all the way down the colonnaded street to Qasr al-Bint and the Basin. It's a longer walk, but absolutely worth the effort. Then there's the third and most challenging level—being fit enough to climb the 900+ steps up to the Monastery. It's massive—larger than the Treasury—and although you can’t go inside, it’s an incredible sight. Alternatively, there’s the High Place of Sacrifice trail. I’ve tried that one twice—from both ends—and I still haven’t made it all the way. It’s just too uneven and slippery, with some big jumps that I’m not quite ready for. Right now, my fitness level will get me comfortably to Qasr al-Bint. If I manage to shed a few kilos—okay, maybe a couple hundred—I might make it back up to the Monastery again. But I’ve already been up there three times, so it’s not high on my priority list this visit.
