Umayyad Palace at the Amman Citadel, JOrdan @julescruisecompanion
When you arrive at the Amman Citadel and head toward the Umayyad Palace, you're immediately struck by the sense of grandeur and history. The first structure you encounter is the monumental entryway—once an imposing gateway that welcomed visitors to this administrative and ceremonial heart of the citadel. Stepping through it, you're guided onto a colonnaded street, an ancient walkway flanked by rows of stone columns that evoke the architectural elegance of early Islamic and Byzantine influence. This colonnaded path leads directly to the palace’s reception hall, a massive domed structure that once served as a formal meeting place for officials and guests. Though partially reconstructed, it gives a powerful sense of the scale and significance the palace once held during the Umayyad period in the 8th century. But the experience isn’t limited to just the main structures. All around this end of the citadel complex, you find scattered remnants of archways, wall niches, and fragmented columns—clues to the many layers of history embedded in this site. These ruins aren’t just architectural leftovers; they tell stories of the site's evolution through Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods. What makes this space so fascinating is how much it still holds despite centuries of decay and change. Walking through it, you're not just seeing ancient stones; you're moving through the legacy of empires, religions, and cultures that have shaped Jordan and the broader region. The Amman Citadel is more than just a historical site—it's a living timeline. And standing amidst the ruins near the Umayyad Palace, you feel the weight and wonder of that history pressing close.
