Hi, it’s Julie from Jules Cruise Companion, Exploring Jordan with Jules, or Retire at 60 — depending on which channel you’re watching today. Today is June 13, 2025, and I’m planning a quick trip to Aqaba. Since Alli’s not available, I’ll be taking the Jet Bus down there, and I’ll return to Amman tomorrow, Saturday the 14th. Last night around 3:30 a.m., Israel bombed targets in Iran again. I received the message early this morning. With Israel escalating conflict repeatedly, it’s no surprise that tourists are hesitant to visit our region. This ongoing unrest is part of a broader strategy by Israel to destabilize the Middle East. The hypocrisy is glaring — Israel can possess nuclear weapons, yet others are denied the same right. This double standard by the West cannot last forever. But despite the turmoil, I’m determined to carry on with my day. War won’t stop life from moving forward. I’m about to call an Uber to get to the bus station shortly. Yesterday, I finished all my laundry and cleaned my house, so when I return on Saturday, I’ll come back to a nice, clean home. I’ve packed my overnight bag and I’m ready for this little adventure. I choose Uber here in Amman because it’s transparent — I pay cash, and so far, I’ve had no issues with any of my rides. It’s Friday, and the streets were quiet, so the ride to the bus station only took about eight minutes. Usually, the Odelli bus station is bustling with buses coming and going. I checked in last night, and there were only four seats left on the Jet Bus, so it’s going to be a full trip. The journey from Amman to Aqaba takes about four hours. The Jet Bus system is ticketed — you show your passport, get assigned a seat, and your luggage is handled by staff. If you need a bathroom break before boarding, there’s a waiting room and toilets just across the street from the bus station. After boarding, we made a quick stop at the 7th Circle in Amman to pick up more passengers before heading south. On the way, you’ll experience four distinct landscapes: starting with the urban sprawl of Amman, moving into an industrial zone, then crossing the vast, rugged terrain of the northern Arabian Desert — the beginning of the famous Wadi Rum Desert — and finally, as you approach Aqaba, you’ll see the majestic mountains bordering the Red Sea coastline. There’s a host on the bus who offers tea, coffee, soft drinks, water, and light snacks. I didn’t take any this time since I brought my own. The bus even has a small restroom near the rear door, though I didn’t use it because it’s quite cramped and uncomfortable, especially for larger passengers. On this trip, there was a young child at the front of the bus, and the host kindly carried the baby up and down the aisle while serving drinks to keep the little one entertained — a lovely touch! As we crossed through Wadi Rum, the landscape transforms dramatically — the minerals in the soil, the colors of the sand, and the towering mountains create one of the most stunning scenes in Jordan. If you’re planning to visit Jordan, learning a few basic Arabic phrases like marhaba (hello), assalamu alaykum (peace be upon you), shai (tea), qahwa (coffee), na’am (yes), and la (no) will enrich your experience and help you connect with locals. As we neared Aqaba, I caught a glimpse of Om Rash Rash, part of the occupied Palestinian territories. Sadly, this city has been devastated by conflict and blockade, with its port city bankrupt. Along with millions worldwide, I hope for the return of these lands to the Palestinian people soon. Here in Jordan, we’re proud to offer the country’s only coastline on the Red Sea, a beautiful gateway for visitors. No matter what is happening globally, Jordan remains open and ready to welcome you with warm hospitality.
