Visiting the Amman Citadel is more than just seeing the iconic Umayyad Palace—there's a full city experience waiting if you're doing a tour with a private driver. Most drivers will take you from the hilltop Citadel down into the heart of old Amman, stopping first at the stunning Roman Amphitheater. This 6,000-seat structure is carved right into the hillside and still hosts events today—an amazing example of Roman engineering and acoustics. From there, you'll usually head into the bustling downtown souk. This is where you can really get a taste of local life. I recommend trying the knafeh at Habiba—it's legendary. Or, if you're in the mood for a full meal, you can visit Hashem Restaurant, one of the oldest and most beloved spots for traditional Jordanian dishes like falafel, hummus, and ful. It’s casual, lively, and very authentic. Back at the Citadel, there's still plenty more to explore. You'll find the ruins of a Byzantine church, with fragments of pillars and mosaics still visible, and the impressive remains of the Temple of Hercules, one of the largest Roman temples ever constructed in the region. Its giant columns and scattered stone blocks speak to the scale and ambition of the Roman presence in Amman. And don’t forget to visit the small but fascinating Jordan Archaeological Museum right on site. It houses artifacts from the Citadel and other ancient Jordanian sites, including pottery, tools, statues, and even some of the famous Ain Ghazal statues—some of the oldest human figures ever discovered. So whether you’re into history, food, or architecture, a visit to the Amman Citadel and its surroundings offers a rich, immersive look at Jordan’s layered past and vibrant present.
