Amman Citadel City Tour , The Citadel, Souks & Ampitheatre @julescruisecompanion #amman #jordan
If you're visiting Amman and decide to take a guided city tour, one of the main highlights will definitely be the Amman Citadel. Perched high above the city, it offers not only sweeping views of the capital but also an incredible concentration of historic ruins from different civilizations that once ruled this region. When you arrive at the Citadel, your guide will likely point out the Temple of Hercules, a Roman-era structure with massive columns that once formed part of an enormous temple complex. Not far from it are the remains of a Byzantine church, where you can still see parts of the original layout and some mosaic work. Nearby, there’s also a lime kiln—evidence of practical, everyday activities that once took place here. As you walk further into the site, you’ll come across the remnants of the Umayyad Mosque and, just behind that, the grand entryway to the Umayyad Palace. This palace complex, dating back to the 8th century, gives you a glimpse into early Islamic architecture and the importance of Amman as a regional center during the Umayyad period. After exploring the Citadel, your tour will probably continue downhill to the Roman Amphitheater, a beautifully preserved structure carved into the hillside. It’s still used for cultural events and is a striking example of Roman urban design. Altogether, a city tour in Amman gives you a balanced view of both ancient history and living culture, with the Citadel standing as one of the most fascinating and scenic stops.
