Amman Citadel, must-see centre of the city @julescruisecompanion #amman #jordan
When you visit the Amman Citadel, you're not just seeing one period of history—you’re witnessing centuries of layered civilizations. One of the main highlights is the Temple of Hercules, an awe-inspiring Roman structure with towering columns that dominate the skyline. It dates back to the 2nd century AD and reflects the importance of Roman rule in this area, once known as Philadelphia. Nearby, you’ll find a lime kiln, a reminder of the practical side of ancient life. Lime kilns were used to produce lime for building materials, which played a vital role in sustaining construction and infrastructure throughout the city’s long history. Next to that is the remains of a Byzantine church, dating back to around the 5th or 6th century. Though only parts of the foundation and structure remain, you can still feel the reverence of the space—it would have been the center of religious life for Byzantine Christians living in the area. Across from the church is a beautiful mosaic area, likely part of a communal or domestic space, and right nearby is a well—a simple but essential structure. Every civilization that occupied this hill needed access to water, and this well represents that timeless need. It's easy to imagine people drawing water, gathering to talk, and going about daily life here. If you had lived during the Byzantine period, you’d likely have lived just across the street from this church, part of a tightly-knit community centered on faith and survival. Exploring the Citadel really brings this ancient neighborhood to life—its places of worship, its workspaces, and the ever-present importance of water and connection.
