After days of delays, storms and missed ports on the “Banana Cruise”, we finally arrive at our first port Santa Cruz de Tenerife on board P&O Iona. With a huge improvement in the weather, this port day felt like a turning point for the cruise. Santa Cruz is incredibly close to the cruise terminal, so I start the day walking straight into the city centre before hopping on the tram to San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a beautiful historic city filled with colourful streets, architecture and a relaxed atmosphere. On the return journey, I visit the striking Auditorio de Tenerife, one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, before heading back into the centre to explore the lush Parque García Sanabria, a peaceful green space right in the heart of the city. After returning to P&O Iona for dinner, the ship remains in port late giving me the perfect opportunity to head back out and experience Santa Cruz’s spectacular Christmas lights. The festive displays are truly magnificent and a real highlight of the port. As the night comes to an end, we sail away from Tenerife under the lights… but with more storms waiting for us ahead, the calm won’t last for long.
