The global game of cruise duck hide-and-seek has brought immense joy to hundreds of thousands of passengers. It connects strangers, delights children, and adds an extra layer of magic to sea days. However, we have noticed a troubling trend as this craze explodes. On cruise forums, it is now common to see passengers with hundreds of cheap, mass-produced plastic and rubber ducks, ready to scatter across the ship. While the fun is undeniable, the environmental reality is hard to ignore. We are taking mounting piles of plastic out into a delicate marine environment. Many of these ducks are destined for landfill, or worse, end up lost at sea, contributing to the catastrophic micro-plastic pollution of our oceans. As cruisers, we love the sea. It’s our playground, our escape, and our passion. We don’t want to stop people having fun, but we wanted to find a way to keep the magic of the duck hunt alive without harming the very oceans we travel. So, we started the Travelling Light Duck Trail! These aren't generic, factory-moulded plastics. Every single duck is individually cut from plywood and hand-painted by me using sustainable, eco-friendly paints. They are all named and numbered. Because I paint them completely individually, every duck has its own unique personality, expression, and charm and no two will ever be the same. If you turn one over, you won’t find a mass-production stamp. Instead, you'll see a beautifully laser-etched reverse side featuring a QR code and the name of our official Facebook group - The Travelling Light Duck Trail. When you buy a standard plastic duck, you hide it, walk away, and usually never see or hear of it again. It becomes litter or someone else's clutter.
