Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has a lot going for it, but no cruise line is perfect. In this video, I’m talking about some of the NEGATIVES of cruising with NCL and the things you should know before spending your vacation dollars. One of the biggest complaints about Norwegian Cruise Line is how quickly the extras can add up. The advertised cruise fare may look attractive, but specialty dining, drink packages, gratuities, WiFi, excursions and other onboard purchases can make the final cost considerably higher than expected. Another issue is crowds. On some NCL ships, popular venues, pools, elevators and buffet areas can feel packed, especially during sea days and peak travel periods. Reservations can also become important for specialty restaurants and entertainment, which may take away some of the spontaneity people expect from a cruise vacation. Food can be another mixed bag. NCL has some excellent specialty restaurants, but that raises the question: should you have to pay extra to get the best dining experience? Main dining room and buffet quality can vary depending on the ship and sailing. Then there’s service. NCL’s Freestyle Cruising concept gives passengers more flexibility, but some cruisers feel the experience can be less personal than on cruise lines where you have traditional dining and the same servers each night. NCL also has a reputation for offering plenty of upgrades and add-ons. For some passengers, it can feel like you’re constantly being encouraged to spend more money after you’re already onboard. Does that make Norwegian Cruise Line bad? Absolutely not. NCL can be a great choice, especially for travelers who value flexibility, entertainment and a more casual atmosphere. But understanding the negatives BEFORE booking can help you decide whether NCL is right for you. Have you cruised Norwegian? What did you LOVE—and what did you NOT like?
