When you visit the Amman Citadel, you're stepping into layers of history from multiple civilizations. One of the first things you'll likely notice is the Temple of Hercules—its massive columns are hard to miss and stand as a dramatic reminder of the Roman presence in Amman. The temple dates back to the 2nd century AD and would have been one of the most important buildings in Roman Philadelphia, as the city was then known. Not far from the temple, there’s a Byzantine church, with the remains of its stone foundations and layout still visible. Just nearby, you can also explore what’s left of the Byzantine residential area. You can imagine daily life here, with homes and communal spaces that would’ve once been full of activity. As you move toward the Umayyad section of the Citadel, you'll come to the grand entry hall of the Umayyad Palace. This monumental gateway leads into what was once a vibrant palace complex from the early Islamic period, around the 8th century. Just next to the palace entryway is the large cistern—a key feature of the site. This ancient water system could hold around 1,700 cubic meters of water and was vital for the functioning of the palace and the hammam, or bathhouse. The bathhouse had three rooms—like traditional Roman-style baths—known as the frigidarium (cold room), tepidarium (warm room), and caldarium (hot room), showing how Roman influence persisted into the Islamic period. Altogether, the Amman Citadel offers a rich mix of Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad architecture, all in one location. It’s like walking through centuries of Jordan’s history in a single visit.
