Nabatean Amphitheatre at Petra, Jordan @julescruisecompanion #petra #visitjordan #nabatean
One of my favorite spots in Petra is the Nabataean Amphitheater. It’s an incredible piece of engineering and artistry—45 tiers of seating carved directly out of the rose-colored rock. Originally, it would have held around 6,000 people, which is remarkable when you think about the time and tools they had. What’s fascinating is that the Nabataeans actually carved this theater into an area that had older tombs. So in creating this performance space, they disturbed and partially erased some of their own ancestors’ graves. It’s a reminder of how dynamic and evolving these ancient sites really were—they weren’t frozen in time the way we see them now. When the Romans arrived in the first century, they did what the Romans did best—expanded and refined the architecture. The front section of the theater was remodeled to suit Roman tastes and performance styles, giving it that blend of Nabataean originality with Roman flair. It’s a beautiful synthesis of cultures and still feels incredibly grand when you stand in front of it. Even today, the amphitheater hasn’t lost its sense of purpose. While events are rare now, Jordan sometimes uses these ancient spaces for concerts and cultural performances. The last concert held here in Petra was back in 1994. Over in Jerash, though, they still hold music festivals and performances every year at the Roman theater there—another stunning site if you’re heading north. This spot in Petra is more than just a photo opportunity—it’s a living reminder of how art, culture, and politics have always intersected, even thousands of years ago.
