When you're planning your visit to Petra, there are a few important things I always recommend based on experience—both practical and emotional. First, get your physical fitness up. Petra is not flat. You’ll be walking long distances on slippery rock, uneven ground, soft sand, and ancient stairs. If you’re not prepared physically, it can be exhausting. But beyond just physical stamina, I also encourage people to prepare themselves psychologically. Petra is powerful. It’s not just the heat or the distance—it’s the emotional weight of the place. There’s a spiritual energy here, something ancient and moving that can catch you off guard. Being in the presence of such incredible human history can be surprisingly draining. There’s very little shade down here, so sun protection is critical. I always bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and make sure my arms are covered. The sun can be brutal, especially between 11 AM and 3 PM, when the whole park bakes under the blazing sky. At the same time, that harsh light brings out the beauty of the rose-red rock, so if you can manage the heat, the views are stunning. I never head down into Petra without my daypack, and I pack it with care. Some must-haves: electrolyte tablets or rehydration powder, Panadol for headaches or fatigue, band-aids, and Vaseline for blisters—because sore feet can ruin your day fast. Comfortable shoes are essential, and if they’re new, break them in well before your trip. Finances are another thing to plan ahead. If you’re thinking of taking the electric buggy—say, from the entrance to the Treasury, or from the amphitheater to the Basin—budget around 15 to 25 JD per ride. Horse rides are technically included in the ticket, but tipping is expected and the amounts can vary wildly. I recently spoke to a British traveler who said he was asked for a 30–40 JD tip after a short ride. It’s important to be prepared so you’re not caught off guard or uncomfortable in those situations. Food and drinks inside Petra are pricey. I always pack snacks—boiled eggs, fruit, protein bars—and extra water. It’s especially helpful if you’ve brought something from your hotel breakfast. Staying hydrated and fueled makes a huge difference. Lastly, budget your time. Petra is massive, and if you want to get the most out of it, plan your visit across two or even three days. It’s doable in one, but it won’t be comfortable unless you’re really fit. I recommend coming early in the morning when it’s cool, or in the late afternoon if you’re just exploring briefly. Avoid the midday heat if you can—unless you're chasing that magical golden light across the sandstone cliffs. Petra is a wonder of the world for good reason. If you come prepared, physically, emotionally, and practically, you’ll get to experience it fully—and it’ll stay with you for a lifetime.
