Drinking Water in Amman In Amman, I get my drinking water from a local water shop where I purchase 19-litre bottles. These large bottles are convenient and ensure I have a reliable supply of clean drinking water. The cost for each 19-litre bottle is quite reasonable, typically ranging from 1 to 2 JOD, which is roughly AUD 2 to 4. This method of purchasing water is common in Jordan, as it ensures access to purified water, especially important given the region's water quality concerns. Walking Later in the Day I prefer to walk later in the day or early evening in Amman because the temperatures are cooler then. The midday heat can be quite intense, especially during the summer months, making it uncomfortable and potentially unsafe to walk during those hours. By choosing to walk in the cooler parts of the day, I can enjoy my strolls more comfortably and safely, taking in the city's sights and sounds while avoiding the harsh sun. Public Transportation in Amman Amman has a public transportation system that includes buses and shared taxis (known as "service" taxis). While I have not yet caught a bus, I have downloaded the app, which provides schedules and routes, making it easier to navigate the city's transport options. Public buses are an affordable way to get around, with fares typically around 0.5 to 1 JOD per ride. The bus system is extensive, covering many areas of the city, though it can be challenging for newcomers due to less frequent schedules and variable conditions. Shared taxis offer a more flexible option, often used for shorter distances and more direct routes. Learning Arabic with Magnets To help me learn Arabic, I have children’s Arabic script magnets on my fridge. These colorful and interactive magnets are a great way to familiarize myself with the Arabic alphabet and common words. They provide a daily visual reminder and an easy way to practice, making learning the language fun and engaging. By integrating language learning into everyday activities like getting something from the fridge, I can reinforce my skills regularly. Crossing the Street in Amman When crossing the street in Amman, I have to adjust my usual habits from Australia. In Australia, I am used to looking right first, but in Amman, I need to look left, look right, and then look left again. This adjustment is crucial for ensuring my safety, as traffic patterns and the direction of oncoming vehicles are different here. Being mindful of this change helps me navigate the streets more safely and avoid potential accidents.
