This visit to Petra felt different from my previous trips—there are a lot more tourists in Jordan now, and honestly, that’s fantastic. It’s great to see so many people exploring the country, and the influx means more work for local guides, which is always a positive thing for the community. What really stood out to me this time, though, was the return of the Instagram crowd. You can’t miss them—mostly women dressed in flowing chiffon dresses with capes, posing dramatically in front of iconic backdrops. I get it, they want beautiful photos, but let’s be real: those outfits are incredibly impractical for Petra. This isn’t a fashion shoot set. It's dusty, hot, and rugged terrain. Wearing synthetic fabric that clings, gets caught on rocks, or flaps in the wind isn’t just uncomfortable—it’ll ruin your day. You’ll be sweaty, sunburnt, and constantly adjusting your outfit instead of enjoying the experience. I’ve also noticed a lot of visitors still showing up in completely inappropriate clothing. Think tank tops, shoestring straps, short shorts. There’s barely any shade in Petra—except for parts of the Siq—so unless you want to leave here looking like a lobster, dress smart. I always recommend wearing lightweight, long-sleeved cotton shirts. You can wear your tank underneath if you like—nobody’s judging you for that—but covering up is about protecting yourself. The locals at the site won’t care much about what you're wearing in terms of modesty, but your skin and your comfort will. A few more tips while I’m on it: drink water constantly. Yes, I know there aren’t many toilets in Petra—and honestly, only three of them are worth using—but don’t skip hydration. Dehydration hits fast out here. Bring sunscreen, wear a proper hat, and always have comfortable, broken-in shoes. This is not the place to try out your brand-new sandals. Cover your arms, your neck, and pace yourself—because Petra’s beauty is best enjoyed when you’re not in pain or distracted by sunburn and blisters.
