Grundarfjörður Cruise Port | We Walked to Iceland’s Most Photographed Waterfall
Can you walk from the Grundarfjörður cruise port to Kirkjufellsfoss without booking an excursion? That’s exactly what we did during our port day in Iceland. After arriving in the small fishing town of Grundarfjörður, we explored the area around the harbor, saw the historic fishing boat Brana, visited Grundarfjarðarkirkja and then continued toward Kirkjufell Mountain. The walk from town to Kirkjufellsfoss is approximately 2.5–3 kilometers—or about 1.5–1.9 miles—each way. Along the route, we enjoyed beautiful coastal scenery, Icelandic horses and constantly changing views of Kirkjufell. Our reward was Kirkjufellsfoss, a small series of waterfalls framed by the 1,519-foot Kirkjufell. Together, they create one of the most photographed landscapes in Iceland. Kirkjufell also appeared as “Arrowhead Mountain” in Game of Thrones. No tour bus and no expensive excursion—just a scenic walk from the cruise port to one of Iceland’s most recognizable views.
