Ísafjörður Cruise Port: Dynjandi Waterfall Is a MUST!
Is Ísafjörður worth exploring on your own, or should cruise passengers book an excursion? We started our day by walking through the small town of Ísafjörður, the largest community in Iceland’s remote Westfjords. We explored its quiet streets, waterfront area and colorful Rainbow Path at Silfurtorg. The town was pleasant and easy to walk, but we didn’t think there was enough there to fill an entire port day. Then we left town for an excursion to Dynjandi Waterfall—and that completely changed our experience. Dynjandi means “The Thunderous One,” and the name fits perfectly. This spectacular waterfall drops approximately 100 meters—or 328 feet—and widens as it descends, creating the appearance of a giant bridal veil. The walk toward the main waterfall also passes several smaller cascades, with increasingly impressive views along the way. Although you can certainly enjoy a short walk around Ísafjörður without an excursion, this is one Icelandic cruise port where we strongly recommend getting beyond town. Dynjandi was spectacular and became one of the highlights of our time in Iceland. Join us as we explore Ísafjörður and decide whether the excursion to Dynjandi Waterfall deserves a place in your Iceland cruise plans. We’re Ed and Mai, early retirees traveling the world and sharing what cruise ports, excursions and destinations are really like—including what we believe is worth the money.
