Our **Bilbao cruise port** stop took us on an unforgettable excursion through Spain’s Basque Country! We hiked to the spectacular coastal location known as **Dragonstone in Game of Thrones**, explored the fishing town of Bermeo, discovered the history of Gernika, and returned to Bilbao to see the famous Guggenheim Museum and its incredible outdoor sculptures. Our first stop was **San Juan de Gaztelugatxe**, the dramatic rocky island used as Dragonstone in *Game of Thrones*. Our family wanted to visit this famous filming location, so we took on the challenging hike, crossed the stone bridge, climbed the stairs to the chapel, and then made the steep hike back up. Unfortunately, the chapel was closed during our visit, but the scenery made the effort worthwhile! Next, we stopped in **Bermeo**, a traditional Basque fishing town. While some of our group had time for lunch, we wandered around the local produce market and explored the waterfront. We then visited **Gernika (Guernica)**, a town with a powerful and tragic history. On April 26, 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, Gernika was devastated by aerial bombing. We saw historical information about the attack, a ceramic reproduction of Pablo Picasso’s famous *Guernica* painting, the historic Church of Santa María, the grounds of the Gernika Assembly House and the symbolic Tree of Gernika. We also walked past the town’s beautiful flower clock gardens. Back in **Bilbao**, we saw the spectacular exterior of the Guggenheim Museum and several of its famous outdoor artworks, including **Puppy** by Jeff Koons, **Maman** by Louise Bourgeois, and **Tall Tree & The Eye**. We also passed San Mamés Stadium, home of Athletic Club Bilbao, and the impressive Sacred Heart of Jesus Monument. This excursion gave us an incredible mix of coastal scenery, a challenging hike, local Basque life, history and modern art—all during one of our European cruise port stops.
