Our day in Trondheim, Norway, combined a Princess Cruises shore excursion with plenty of exploring on our own. We started with the Bymarka Hike, our first-ever Princess excursion, which cost $110 per person. Although we enjoyed the scenery and hiking near Gråkallen, Bymarka has no admission fee, the bus ride was fairly short and there was only one guide for our large group—so we ultimately felt the excursion was overpriced. After returning to Trondheim, we continued exploring the city on foot. Our walk took us through Torvet, Trondheim’s central square, where we saw the towering monument to Viking king and city founder Olav Tryggvason. We also passed the medieval Church of Our Lady before reaching Nidaros Cathedral—Norway’s national shrine and one of the country’s most important historic buildings. Construction on Nidaros Cathedral began around 1070 over the traditional burial place of Saint Olav. Beside it stands the medieval Archbishop’s Palace, which now houses cathedral artifacts, military exhibits and Norway’s Royal Regalia. From there, we walked through Marinen Park along the Nidelva River and reached Gamle Bybro, Trondheim’s famous Old Town Bridge. Its red gateways are known as the Portal of Happiness, and legend says couples who kiss beneath them will enjoy happiness together. We finished our walk by crossing Verftsbrua, better known as the Flower Bridge, a modern pedestrian and bicycle bridge lined with colorful flowers. Join us as we experience Trondheim from its mountain trails to its medieval landmarks—all during one memorable cruise-port day. We’re Ed and Mai, early retirees traveling the world and sharing what cruise ports are really like, whether we book an excursion or explore them independently.
