Copenhagen Cruise Port: We Walked Into Town… Bad Idea?
We decided to explore Copenhagen, Denmark, on foot from our cruise ship—but the walk into the city was not what we expected! After leaving Sky Princess, our route took us through a busy industrial shipyard area filled with large trucks, traffic, dirt, and dust. It wasn’t an enjoyable walk and certainly didn’t give us the best first impression of Copenhagen. Fortunately, everything changed once we reached the Little Mermaid and began exploring the city’s waterfront parks. From the Little Mermaid, we continued through Langelinie and Churchill Park, where we discovered the impressive Gefion Fountain and beautiful St. Alban’s Church. We also visited the Our Fallen memorial before walking into Kastellet, Copenhagen’s historic star-shaped fortress. The orange-red buildings inside Kastellet looked military—and we discovered that they are! The fortress dates to the 1600s and remains an active Danish military installation, even though much of the area is open for the public to explore. We walked among the former barracks, climbed the peaceful ramparts, and saw the historic Kastellet Windmill. On our way back to the ship, we passed through quieter residential areas and noticed Copenhagen’s excellent bicycle lanes and paths. The city itself was beautiful, clean, green, and extremely bicycle-friendly. Unfortunately, we eventually had to return through the same noisy industrial port area to reach the ship. Was walking from the Copenhagen cruise port worth it? We enjoyed everything we found once we reached the sightseeing area, but we would probably choose a different way to get there next time.
